The first Labor Day was celebrated September 5, 1882, in New York City. Planned by the Central Labor Union, the first Labor Day celebration was originally in the form of a parade. Determined to showcase the strength and spirit of the trade and labor organizations that defined many American communities, there was also a festival that would follow. This parade and festival was meant for the workers themselves and their families to partake in on this extra day away from work. Over time, Labor Day celebrations began to hold less jovial events, as increasing emphasis was placed on the economic and civic significance. Filled with importance, the emphasis on the economic and societal importance of Labor Day has gone less noticed in recent years.
