To say that Monterey is such a beautiful place to visit seems redundant. If you are fortunate enough to LIVE here, then you should be steeped in gratitude. It would be kinda hard not to be, really. Think about this time of year and how many parts of the country aren’t necessarily steeped in gratitude but in snow, sleet, and downright terrible weather! Makes me shiver simply to think about it. We often refer to our spring as being a “secret summer” for a reason: The temps are mild, skies mostly clear, and not much fog. What more could a person ask for? That’s why so many people want to live here and when they can’t, they still want to visit. Can’t blame them, that’s for sure!
One of the most amazing aspects of this area is the sheer amount or wildflowers that grace our hillsides and coastline. If this is something that floats your boat, here are some of the top spots in the area: Garrapata State Park (irises, poppies, Indian Paintbrush); Pacific Grove Coastline (The Magic Purple Carpet abounds); Garland’s Ranch (rolling hills covered in vibrant colors); Fort Ord National Monument (poppies, daffodils, lupine); and Pinnacles National Park (Johnny-jump-ups and shooting stars). Whether you want to drive, hike, or bike, there are plenty of Monterey options when it comes to experiencing the unique blooming beauty this area affords.
It’s hard to NOT want to get outside this time of year. The many trails and vistas beckoning in spring make it hard to resist. It’s easy to hike, paraglide, sail, and bike all in just one day here. Otter watching at Elkhorn Slough, horseback riding at Salinas River State Beach, hiking in Carmel Valley, or checking out the tidepools at Lovers Point scratch just the surface of all of the possible outdoor activities you can enjoy this time of year. I’ll bet your cousins in Minnesota are a wee bit jealous of you at this very moment. Even if they don’t say it, we’ll bet good money that they are.
