When it comes to your vehicle's braking system, you never want to put off necessary repairs. You must be able to stop when you need to stop. That may seem obvious to you, but you'd be surprised how many people put off taking care of their brakes. You want to have them inspected periodically, and anytime something seems off with your brakes, that's the time to quit messing around and get them taken care of ASAP! Your safety and that of your passengers are always the number one priority at CARSTAR Robert's Collision & Repair. Make sure that it's yours too.
Here are some common issues that we see here at CARSTAR Robert's Auto Repair that require brake repair and service:
General wear: Over time, the brake pads wear down. Your braking system works hard for you every day. Because of their regular use, take the time to have your brake pads checked every six months or when you suspect a problem. Things to look out for include squeaking, grinding, or taking longer to stop. Most pads have a thin metal tab that vibrates when it's time to change the pads. Some pads do not have this and, if not checked periodically, can wear down far enough to ruin the rotors.
Rotor damage: While this is more common in newer cars, it can happen with all disc-brake systems. Rotors can when overheated or with the incorrect tightening of the wheel. When a rotor warps, you will feel a pulsing sensation when you apply the brakes. This pulsing can be annoying and dangerous. Most newer cars have rotors that are very thin and can easily warp. To fix a warped rotor, we use a lathe to remove the tiniest bit of material from the braking surface. That is enough to restore the flatness of the rotor and eliminates the pulsing sensation in the pedal.
Dirt and grime in the braking system: Over time, brakes can get gunked up with dirt and grime. When this happens, they have to work harder to make your car stop. Keep your wheels and braking system clean, your brakes work better. Clean brakes stop faster and will also help keep things cool. Choose a good wheel cleaner, that you know is safe for your wheel finish.
